Healthy Dessert: Whole Grain Cinnamon Toast

Try it at Home

1. Toast a piece of whole wheat bread to desired crispness.

2. Lightly drizzle with olive oil (less than 1/2 teaspoon is needed)

3. Sprinkle generous amounts of cinnamon

4. Add a very small pinch of brown sugar

Whole grain cinnamon toast is great when you are craving something sweet but have already had your dessert quota for the day. The whole grain bread is filling and satisfying and provides dietary fiber (something that most North Americans don’t get enough of).  The olive oil (which is a good source of monounsaturated fats) makes the taste rich and satisfying but is a healthier alternative to butter, which contains saturated fat, or margarine, which sometimes contains trans fat. Cinnamon is an excellent source of manganese and can be a good source of fiber when used frequently (consuming more than 1 tbsp during the course of the day can provide 10% of dietary fiber).
